Why black? (In case you’ve never heard it)

Black is modest and arrogant at the same time. Black is lazy and easy – but mysterious. But above all black says this: “I don’t bother you – don’t bother me.

All B1ack::.. | an only black products shop

All B1ack::.. is an online shop selling only black products made with natural, organic ingredients.

Actually, at the moment, there are only 4 products for sale. I hope to see a wider offer in the future, but I must admit I already noticed all b1ack::.. more that year ago and everything looks a little too still.

If you want to buy something, I suggest you to contact the shop before placing the order.

That said, the concept is lovely and I confess you that I also thought, several times, to open an all black stuff shop.

The obscure photography of Juha Arvid Helminen

img_6939

Juha Helminem is a Finnish photographer that, with his series The Invisible Empire, explores the dark side of humanity in a smart and peculiar way.

His pictures are set in an undefined war time, the uniforms of the soldiers could be from the future but remind somehow those of the Third Reich army . The faces of the models are all covered in black bandages and masks as to address the attention of the viewer to the whole concept of the image that is, in my opinion, the strongest trait of his work (and of course I am not saying that the graphic work is not good, I really love it and I find it amazing also in technical terms).

The author is not only inspired by wars, there is also some religious details on the props of his pictures and, as he explains on this interview, another effect of hiding the faces of the subjects is to make them free from ethnic traits; in this way, everyone can identify itself on the scenes he creates.

With his images Juha Helminem probably wants to warn us not to make the same mistakes we made in the past, to stop us and to force some meditation about how a uniform can erase or put apart our humanity (wasn’t that a justification of a lot of Nazi Germany soldiers? I was wearing a uniform, I was committed to do it).

Juha Helminem is making great art and expressing strong messages, something rare in the field of dark / obscure art and that’s why I appreciate a lot his work. I am sure you’ll love it too, so check the examples here and head to his website for more pictures.

Disturbing collages and more by Jesse Draxler

jesse draxler

It was some weeks ago that the art of Jesse Draxler caught my attention. I spotted his works on Alicia Hannah Naomi’s (maker of this beautiful pendant + more treasures) Tumblr feed. I immediately followed him on Instagram and Tumblr and after admiring his stuff for days I decided this week’s full post should be about him.

Jesse is an artist, illustrator and designer based in Minneapolis where he makes “the damn thing” (as he says here), primarily using collage but with no fear to explore the possibilities of other mediums, also because switching back and forth between mediums is helpful when he gets stuck.
The collages are made by hand and for the small scale works he uses an Italian glue called Cocoina, something I remember using during my first years at school.

In recent times Jesse reduced the color palette on his works, noticing this helps him to focus more on the composition and the design of the pieces, and started making  several monochrome pieces with a dark and disturbing mood I am sure you’ll love. His main aim is to create a certain mood with his works and, to do this, he listens to what the source images have to tell and tries to transpose it on the final pieces. His influences are always evolving and disparate such as the cosmos, the supernatural, sex, beauty, Alexander McQueen, Rotcho, Kubrik and more.

Reading some interviews I understood he’s not very interested in talking about his art and he prefers way more to make stuff than talk. So let’s give a look to his works and let them speak for him.
