Elena Helfrecht: faerytales and nightmares photography

Elena Helfrecht, photography, dark, obscure, fineartphotography

Elena Helfrecht is a German artist that started taking photographs with her father’s old camera.

She previously used to draw a lot, but with a camera in her hands, she quickly found out that photography suited her creative needs much better than any other art form.

Elena uses art to cope with her own (often distorted) reality, with her darkest dreams, producing pictures that are mainly dark in theme and  tonalities, conveying deep feelings such as fear, pain (physical and mental) and loneliness.
The beauty of the body  (male and female) with his scars, the skin, sometimes bleeding, dirty, somemetimes soft and perfect are recurrent elements in Elena’s work; they tell stories, faerytales, dreams and more often nightmares.
At first sight, all these details could be disturbing, but in my opinion, it’s evident that Elena is not trying to impress anyone, she just speaks about sensitive topics with her own language and her own terms.

Although she admits having also a joyful side, what is sure, is that Elena puts only her obscure part on her pictures and the results are intriguing and intense.

Elena Helfrecht took part to several group shows around the world and one of her pictures has been recently used in a promotional poster for the new series “Dead of Summer” by Freeform (ABC Studios), who also produced “Lost” and “Once Upon A Time”.
