Mira Nedyalkova

Mira Nedyalkova, photography, dark, obscure, dreamy, melancholy, underwater

I have always loved artists who use water on their artworks. I remember being enthralled by a picture by Floria Sigismondi depicting, from behind, a drowning woman on  beautiful white dress or the stunning works of Brooke Shaden.

Mira Nedyalkova is another photographer who decided to incorporate massively the water element on her pictures. The subjects of her works are these beautiful girls floating underwater with eyes closed and several details that tell every time a different story. Dreamy, ethereal, erotic and sad are all adjectives that perfectly describe the work of Mira, who started as a painter and then, after modeling for some time, felt the need to be on the other side of the camera.

On this beautiful Italian interview she explains that with his photography she tries to depict the melancholy that is part of our entire life, that we must understand and accept.

Laura Makabresku

Laura Makabresku, photography, dark, fairytales,, folktales, ethereal, melancholy, obscure,

Today I would love to invite you in a journey to the dark melancholic world of Laura Kamila Kansy (the real name of Laura Makabresku). A world made of obscure and sad folk tales, a world far apart that can be only perceived through amazing and breathtaking pictures.

Laura created her own world made of self inflicted scars, dead animals, pale bodies, erotic intimacy and collections of items such as locks of hair, dry flowers and thousands of books.

She then learned to use photography to depict her live inside this strange world; most of her pictures are, in fact, self portraits or, actually, pictures of parts of her body surrounded and dressed with all the little treasures she collects. Few other people appear sometimes in her photos: her husband and some (very close, I guess) friends.

It’s some years already I am following Laura’s work and although there are some small theme variations on her body of work, you can immediately recognize one of her pictures and this, in my (personal of course) opinion is what makes an artist a great one.

I think this description made by Laura on Tumblr could be enough to explain her work:

My photographies are like screenshots from beautiful but cruel fairy tales. Their narrations are not straight. Images that appear are more like feelings that come during a lecture of an old folk-based story – full of witchcrafts and retributions. The structure of my works is similar to the structure of a dream where natural tendencies of collecting and organizing impulses and motivations coincide with irrational clashes of objects and feelings. Isolation and wounds are closed into patterns, uneasy and artificial orders – visual spells created in order to divide beastillness from humanity and dreams from horror.

Check these examples here, but please, be sure to visit her Tumblr page to see all her other lovely works, if you love photography and dark faery tales you’ll immediately love Laura’s world.

Gabriel Isak’s melancholic silent dreams

Gabriel Isak

Looking at the works of Swedish photographer Gabriel Isak, you can feel contrasting emotions. His photo manipulations depict isolated and lonely subjects lost in foggy, desolated backgrounds, with subtle details and the face usually covered by smoke, hair, birds or balloons. All these elements contribute to create a sort of surreal and melancholic yet tranquil, peaceful mood. Even when elements in motion are present in the scene, everything looks motionless, peacefully static. Recurring elements on Gabriel Isak’s photography are present, such as fog, birds, trees, oceans and seas. The colors are dark, cold. With all these mixing elements the viewer is transported in a melancholic silent dream, but if you let go any fear you’ll start slowly perceive the sense of tranquillity of Isak’s beautiful visions.
